The opening of Health City Cayman Islands promises to be the proverbial ‘shot in the arm’ for the economy here in Cayman, drawing patients and medical tourists from the greater Caribbean area and eventually from throughout the world. The fifteen-year plan for the new, state-of-the-art development will include enough space for 2,000 beds, the creation of hundreds of new jobs, tens-of-thousands of new tourists visiting the country each year and a capital investments that nears $2 billion US dollars. This medical facility alone is projected to add somewhere along the lines of $3 billion US dollars to the local GDP (Gross Domestic Product) within the next ten years.
Health City is the brain child of famous Indian cardiologist and philanthropist Dr. Devi Shetty. Dr. Shetty is the founder and chairman of Narayana Health and has opened over two-dozen locations across the world. Perhaps the most significant feature of Dr. Shetty’s facility is his innovative cost cutting methods of delivering technologically advanced methods of healthcare to people of all socio-economic statuses. It is this caring for the poor and disenfranchised that will mark Dr. Shetty’s legacy.
The official ribbon cutting was held last Tuesday and was attended by a wide variety of investors, local leaders and medical industry representatives. Of note were representatives from Bank of America, Harvard University, Silicon Valley, Medtronic, Kaiser Permanente, The University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic. The project has been lauded for bringing together multiple partnerships, cutting across bureaucratic Caymanians. It seems that with Health City Cayman Islands the health of the nation, and that of its economy, will greatly improve.
