A (holi)day in Cayman

As a British Overseas Territory, Cayman celebrates many UK holidays. Today, we are celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. As an official public holiday, this means that many businesses are closed or on reduced hours. Cayman prides itself…

…on its British roots and special ceremonies and events are being held to commemorate the Queen’s reign.

Ceremonies are often held at the Legislative Assembly building in George Town. Special functions such as the Queen’s birthday are marked with a ceremony at Government House, the residence of the Governor of the Cayman Islands who is appointed by the UK. Holidays also often include some sort of event on the water. This weekend, Cayman posted its own flotilla on the George Town harbor in recognition of the special events being held in London.

Ever since Kate and William’s wedding last year, fascinators and fancy hats have been appearing at fund raisers and other events in Cayman. On Saturday, a ‘picnic in the park’ was held at Camana Bay in homage to the Queen’s tea being held in London. Fancy dress and especially elaborate hats were de rigueur for the event. Naturally, British citizens in residence here support such events. But so do many other nationalities who take advantage of opportunities to join in these formal yet festive parties.
